The Rapid tiebreaks started with two decisive games. Both Mamedyarov and So won against Keymer and Shankland with the last two finding themselves in a must-win situation. The second game of the tiebreaks finished with a draw for So, which was his ticket to the semifinals against Tabatabaei, the winner of Group D.

“On paper it was fine. I came in seeded number 3 in a group both times and I finished in second both times and I gained rating. But I am sort of annoyed with myself that I never managed to get through.” Shankland commented about his overall performance in the tournament.

Keymer on the other hand managed to bounce back from his loss and claimed his chances in the blitz tiebreaks. After an impressive 2-0 score though, Mamedyarov moves to the semifinals against Nakamura, the winner of Group A, and one of the 2022 Candidates.
