All draws in Round 1 of the FIDE Candidates

The FIDE Candidates 2024 kicked off yesterday in Toronto, Canada, and despite the ultimately even scores, the narratives unfolding on the chessboards revealed a tale far more intricate and compelling than mere numbers could convey.

The 8 contenders entered the arena with determination as the inaugural day of the 2024 Candidates Tournament commenced.

Nijat Abasov, in his match against Ian Nepomniachtchi, was among the first to conclude his game in the tournament hall. Despite sporting a noticeable knee brace stemming from a recent surgery, Abasov displayed remarkable fortitude, guiding his moves with meticulous precision. His White pieces held their ground against Nepomniachtchi, a formidable adversary who had clinched victory in the two preceding Candidates Tournaments, ultimately securing a well-earned draw.

GM Hikaru Nakamura, in the most anticipated game of the day, made a bold move by sacrificing two rooks against GM Fabiano Caruana, setting the stage for an intense clash of titans. Despite Caruana securing a comfortable position where a single misstep could spell disaster for Black, Nakamura opted to tread into a line with minimal risk due to the dwindling clock time and absence of an increment. While this decision eased the defensive burden for Black, it also paved the way for the eventual draw.

GM Vidit Gujrathi surprised everyone with a sudden and unexpected strategy against GΜ Gukesh Dommaraju on move 17, but after the game, Vidit found himself in a moment of introspection, questioning whether his decision had been the optimal course of action since it resulted in a draw.

Meanwhile, the matchup between GM Alireza Firouzja and GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu unfolded as a spectacle of creativity and swift counterattacks. Despite the intense back-and-forth, computer evaluations consistently indicated a near-equal footing throughout the game. Ultimately, the intense battle culminated in a perpetual check, resulting in a draw.

Although the final scores remained level, the unfolding narratives on the chessboards unveiled a story far richer and more captivating than mere numerical outcomes could portray.
