MVL won against Predke, the only decisive game of Day 4 of the GP
Round 4 of the FIDE Grand Prix 2022 in Belgrade ended with Group D breaking free from the draws and GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave being the clear leader. At the same time Giri is steadily the leader of Group B with the highest score in the whole tournament.
Round 4 started with the ceremonial first move, made by Dragan Lazic, the president of the Serbian Chess Federation in Vitiugov-Pentala in Belgrade.
It was a drawish day for the Grand Prix today except for the Predke-Maxime Vachier-Lagrave game which ended in favor of MVL. The two GMs found themselves in a sharp Sicilian, while the French GM created some serious winning opportunities. Predke couldn’t hold the pressure for long, and blundered, which led him to an immediate “death”!
This win was the first decisive result in Group D so far which gives MVL a clear advantage and great chances to move on to the semifinals.
With the other 7 draws, the standings remained the same for the rest of the groups, with Andreikin and Shankland co-leading Group A (2.5/4), Giri leading Group B (3/4), Rapport and Vidit co-leading Group C (2.5/4), and MVL leading Group D (2.5/4).
