Pool A

Two decisive games in Group A in Round 5. Aronian-Esipenko was the first decisive game of the day with the American GM achieving a miniature win. “I analysed it some time ago and I knew that this is a playable line, especially in the situation when I have to try to win. I knew that 12...c5 is losing.” Aronian said after the game.

The last decisive game of the day was Nakamura-Oparin. Nakamura pushed hard for a win, and he managed to get it. After these results, Nakamura and Aronian co-lead Group A with 3/5.

Pool B

It was an important half point for Dubov who found himself in an unpleasant position against Keymer after the opening. Also, the group B leaders, Dominguez and Mamedyarov, ended their game in a draw and with these results they remain at the top of Group A.

Pool C

Group C was another decisive group with Wesley So winning a crucial game against Vachier-Lagrave, and Shankland beating Predke with the black pieces.

Pool D

Group D ended in a draw with Vitiugov-Giri being an uneventful game, and Tabatabaei saving a lost endgame against Yu.
