Round 5 started with the ACP President and FIDE Councilor GM Aleksandar Colovic making the ceremonial first move on the board of the Shankland – Andreikin game.

This game was also the first result of the day with the two co-leaders of Group A having a balanced game which ended in a draw after a threefold repetition. Another threefold repetition in Group A with Grischuk drawing a slightly better position with black against Bacrot.

In Group B Harikrishna didn’t hold to his slight advantage and quickly equalized the position against Giri. The game ended in a draw, as well as Tabatabaei-Vitiugov. These results bring Giri very close to moving to the semifinals, as he is the clear leader with a full point advantage.

Group C was the decisive group of the day with Shirov and Rapport winning against Fedoseev and Vidit respectively. Shirov-Fedoseev was definitely the most fascinating game of Round 5 with the Spanish GM defusing all threats on the kingside and cashing out his advantage in 32 moves! In the Vidit-Rapport game, the Indian GM found himself in a difficult and complicated position while in time trouble. Rapport managed to push until the end and earned this very crucial point to lead Group C with a full point.

In Group D all games ended in a draw with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave keeping his lead with 3/5. The French GM gave up his winning chances against Yu while Mamedyarov missed a great opportunity in the middlegame against Predke.
