Dubov Forfeits a Game After Refusing To Wear a Mask in Tata Steel
Daniil Dubov forfeited a game against Anish Giri in Round 7 of the 2022 Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Russian GM did not show up for his game and lost by default after refusing to wear a mask.
This incident shows that COVID-19 has substantial effect on the sport, and elite players grow tired of the strict covid requirements emposed by tournament organizers.
Tata Steel made an official announcement explaining that Dubov had close contact with a COVID-positive individual. His quick test was negative and he was allowed to continue with the tournament but required to wear a mask.
Dubov has previously alerted the organizers that he will not play if required to wear a mask, according to his friend’s explanation via text. Dubov decided not to show up for the game instead of wearing a mask. Giri, who showed up wearing a mask for the game, walked casually around the board for a few minutes and recorded a win.
It appears that Dubov will resume the tournament if his PCR test comes back negative.
Following Dubov’s conspicuous no-show, Twitter exploded with comments on Dubov’s decision and whether it was made in order to protect his opponent or because wearing a mask doesn’t sit well in him.
Молодец, Даниил!
