Rapport beats Vidit to co-lead Group C while Giri is still a point ahead
Day 3 of the FIDE Grand Prix 2022 in Belgrade ended with Group C being the only decisive group, Group D continuing with draws, and Giri still leading Group B with a full point.
FIDE Vice President Nigel Short and former Serbian Minister of Youth and Sports, and Women’s Candidate Alisa Maric made the ceremonial first move, on the board of the Fedoseev-Shirov game; but Vladimir chose not to retain their chosen 1.c3 and opted for 1.d4 instead.
This little twist of events initiated the Semi-Slav Defense in which Fedoseev was building the pressure. After a clear and steady advantage, Fedoseev pushed Shirov to a strategic blunder to eventually win the point.
At the same group, Rapport managed to “break free” from his draws and lead Vidit to a dead-lost position. With this loss the Indian GM is now head to head with Rapport who is now co-leading Group C with 2/3.
All the other games ended in a draw, with Group D not having a single decisive game so far. The most impressive game from all the draws was Harikrishna-Giri, with the Dutch GM making an impressive sacrifice and “winning” Twitter!
