MVL misses his chance and Rapport moves to the FIDE Grand Prix finals

Round 2 of the FIDE Grand Prix 2022 semifinals ended with an amazing game between Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Richard Rapport. The French GM couldn’t cash out his winning position and Rapport moves to the finals. Anish Giri and Dmitry Andreikin will face each other in tomorrow’s tiebreaks.

The second day of the semifinals started with Stojan Vujko, General Director of the Millennium Team construction company, making the ceremonial first move today on the board of the  Andreikin-Giri game.

The first game to finish, Andreikin-Giri, ended in an uneventful draw after 32 moves. The two GMs will face each other in the tiebreaks to determine who is moving to the Grand Prix finals.

“Dmitry once went to the final of the World Cup after winning all the tiebreaks. I would actually think I am an underdog, but as Dmitry mentioned I had a lot of practice and I think my rapid chess improved so now I should be able to put up a good fight.” Anish Giri said afterward.

The most exciting game of Round 2 was MVL against Rapport. The Hungarian GM has won the first game of the semifinals and only needed a draw to move to the finals. The game started with the Ruy Lopez and reached a complicated endgame. The engine was in favor of White and MVL kept his advantage and created great winning chances. Nonetheless, he couldn’t squeeze the point out of this eventful game and Rapport is the first one to move to the finals.
