Young players are pushing forward at the Mikhail Tal 85th Anniversary Tournament
The 19-year-old GM from Ukraine, Kirill Shevchenko, won the Lindores Abbey Blitz tournament in Riga finishing half a point ahead of the 2016 Challenger Fabiano Caruana.
18-year-old Alireza Firoujza showed the way with his remarkable win at the Grand Swiss, and even more young players are striving to enter the elite of top players. One of them is Kirill Shevchenko who surprised everyone (even himself) with his dominance at the Mikhail Tal 85th Αnniversary Tournament against many well-known names like Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Levon Aronian.
Also, another youngster, the 18-year-old Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi, had an incredible performance, beating Levon Aronian, David Howell, and Rauf Mamedov, and scoring 9½ points from the first five double-rounds, but in the eighth double-round, Erigaisi lost to Shevchenko and ended up in the third place.
It seems that the Magician from Riga, Mikhail Tal, “charmed” this young generation of chess players and the results are magnificent!
