The 2021 World Championship Match on replay but…faster!
The Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 finals are about to start with the World Champion Magnus Carlsen and the 2021 Challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi facing each other.
Tour’s semi-finals kicked off with a numb vibe after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine overnight. The – so far – leader of the tour, Ian Nepomniachtchi, along with Andrey Esipenko and Vladislav Artemiev expressed their desire to continue in the tournament, but they were blatantly affected by the situation.
In chess terms, both Nepo and Carlsen won 2.5-0.5 against Esipenko and Artemiev respectively, but Nepo admitted that his play was “very, very bad because I can’t think”.
Today, Carlsen and Nepo will face each other again after their World Championship match in Dubai, but this time chess will be faster and finals will be shorter!
On this matter, Russia’s no.1 said: “The revenge for the World Championship match can only be satisfied in a World Championship match!”
Watch the Tour’s finals at 6PM CET on the World Chess broadcasting page.
