The first result of the semifinals was Hikaru Nakamura against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. The game ended in an uneventful draw after 30 moves.

“It’s quite nice to qualify but also very tricky because for the last 24-48 hours my thoughts are on that event and preparation. And then in today’s game, it’s an opening that many people at the Candidates might play, so I did not want to do anything too exciting.” Nakamura commented during the post-game interview.

The second game of the semifinals between Wesley So and Amin Tabatabaei was a decisive one. So went for a clear win against the Iranian GM, increasing his chances of moving to the finals. Tabatabaei is in a must-win situation with the white pieces, tomorrow, at the second game of the semifinals.
