Norway Chess 2023: All you need to know
Norway Chess is one of the world’s most prestigious and strongest chess tournaments since 2013, hosted in Stavanger. This year it will take place between May 26th and June 10th, starting with the Norway Chess Open, and welcoming the chess elite – Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Gukesh D., and more – on May 29th.
Open 2023
Norway Chess starts on May 26th with an Open Blitz Tournament, and continues with an Open Tournament of 10 Rounds, between May 27th and June 3rd. The tournament has two groups, one GM and one ELO group, so that more players can participate in this prestigious event. In 2022, Indian GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu won the Norway Chess Open while in 2021 Gukesh D. won the same tournament and this year he was invited for the first time at the Norway Chess Masters.
Players
This year is a special year for Norway Chess as the former World Champion Magnus Carlsen will be playing almost a month after the World Chess Championship Match from which he withdrew. Magnus has won Norway Chess four times in a row and five in total, and this year will compete against nine super-GMs.
- His favorite contender for his World Chess Championship Match encounter, and the youngest to surpass 2800, becoming World No.2 in December 2021, GM Alireza Firouzja.
- The 2023 Tata Steel Masters winner, and World No.3 on February 2015, GM Anish Giri.
- The 2019 Fischer Random World Champion, and 2022 Chesscom Global Championship winner, GM Wesley So.
- The 2017 FIDE Grand Prix winner, and 2018 Biel Chess Festival winner, GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
- The 2021 World Rapid Champion, the 18-year-old chess prodigy, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
- The youngest player ever to defeat Magnus Carlsen, and the youngest Indian player to cross 2700, and break into World Top 100, GM Gukesh D.
- The 2018 Challenger, and 2023 Superbet Chess Classic Champion, GM Fabiano Caruana.
- The greatest chess streamer, and five-time US Champion, GM Hikaru Nakamura.
- Norway’s No.2, who beat Magnus in the 2022 Norway Chess Tournament, GM Aryan Tari.

The total prize fund of the event is 2,500,000 NOK, which is around €200,000, with the first getting 750,000 and the last 120,000. The event starts with a blitz tournament and continues with the classical one. The final standings of the blitz event determine players’ seeds for the classical event, which starts on May 30th at 17:00 CEST.
