Is President Carlsen in FIDE’s Future?
Is President Carlsen in FIDE’s Future? No, we don’t mean the current World Champion. Rather, it is his father, Henrik, who first got his son hooked on the game.
Our well-placed sources say that Henrik is mulling a run for the presidency of the World Chess Federation, which is also known as FIDE. We don’t know if he is considering throwing his hat into the ring because he is dissatisfied with the current administration headed by Arkady Dvorkovich, who was elected in 2018. Or, perhaps he wants to give back to the game that has given his family so much.
The next election is still two years away, so there is plenty of time before Henrik has to make a decision and assemble a team of officials to run with him.
World Champions, or, in this case, a proxy for one, running for the presidency of FIDE have a mixed history. Max Euwe led the federation from 1970 to 1978, but Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov were soundly defeated in 2010 and 2014, respectively, when they ran for office.
