Three rounds before the end of the tournament, and right before his match against GM Richard Rapport, the Russian GM tested positive for Covid and left the tournament. This means that the results of his previous matches will stand and that Dubov will forfeit the games against the opponents he was to face in the last three rounds (Rapport, Praggnanandhaa, and Carlsen)

A couple of days ago, on Round 7, Dubov had forfeited his game against Anish Giri Dubov had forfeited his game against Anish Giri for covid-related issues. Dubov had close contact with a COVID-positive individual, but because his quick test was negative, the organizers allowed him to continue with the tournament wearing a mask. Dubov refused, as he had already informed the tournament organization that he will not play if required to wear a mask. When his PCR came out negative, Dubov continued the tournament.

It is really unfortunate and disappointing for a top player to miss an over-the-board tournament these days, but a player’s health is a top priority in every situation. The chess community wishes Dubov a fast and easy recovery.
