Ding Liren was outplayed in game 5 of the World Chess Championship Match
Game 5 of the World Chess Championship Match between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren was the third decisive, more than the 2016 and 2018 matches combined, with Nepo storming back after yesterday’s loss to take a 3:2 lead.
The game started with the Ruy Lopez Opening, where Nepomniachtchi blitzed out the first 22 moves. “Definitely the position was in my prep, but for the most part, he played quite sensible moves. It’s quite normal I think.” Nepo said at the press conference.
On move 40 Ding was left with seconds, but Nepo was already completely winning, with 1 hour and 40 minutes on his clock! The Chinese GM resigned after 8 more moves with GM Anish Giri commenting: “Today Ding lost without blundering a single thing. Ding just lost with a few small mistakes”
Meanwhile, rumours are spreading on the 14th World Champion Vladimir Kramnik being Nepo’s coach for the match!
